In your lead-in, you say that Matt Wieters has been outstanding since his major league debut, "by any measure."

This is simply incorrect.

How about an offensive measure: he has 5 homeruns, 10 doubles, 20 runs, and 26 RBI to go with his sub-700 OPS. Over the course of a full season, this translates very poorly.

How about a defensive measure: his wild pitch plus passed balls per game are the worst of the Orioles' three catchers, and his catcher's ERA is 4.93, which ain't great. He has thrown out only 26% of basestealers, and with 51 stolen bases in just 71 games he is on pace to allowed well over 100 stolen bases in a full season.

I like Matt Wieters and the young Orioles pitchers a lot. I like them last year when they were all in Bowie with the BaySox, and I like them in the majors. In fact, I even wrote an article about it on my own baseball web site: http://baseballevolution.com/asher/00043.html.

However, let's not go using the word "outstanding" to describe Wieters' success. While his performance has been admirable, underrated, under-valued, or hard to appreciate, and while his willingness to approach what you have well-laid out as a difficult task for a young pitcher, his performance has hardly been outstanding, and even if you find certain things he's done to be outstanding, it is simply untrue that he has been outstanding "by any measure."
