The chess match, the grind, and yes the lengthy games. A fan can either appreciate the game for it's unique qualities like this one, or they can watch something else. I don't watch baseball regularly because there's so many "meaningless" games. Not because the individual games take to long. That's my perspective, interesting article though. Probably also worth noting that a lot of old-timers (notably Nolan Ryan) also believe that the modern use of the bullpen has actually hurt the durability of starters as well. Ryan maintains that starters need to throw MORE, instead of being babied more. Great stuff, Peter!
