I believe Bill James was correct when he stated in one of his books that milestones like 3,000 hits and 300 wins didn`t really grab the attention of players and fans until the Hall of Fame came into existence in 1936.Years earlier Ty Cobb`s 4,000 hit got scant attention in the sports page.Apparently Paul Waner and Al Simmons quests for the magic milestone of 3,000 hits were the first to draw attention.Waner was successful but Simmons, much to his chagrin, ran out of steam and failed to reach the mark.(He bemoaned the fact that he took off too many days during his prime).Personally,I think getting 3,000 hits could be a bit overrated. As proof that you don`t absolutely need to garner 3,000 hits to be a great hitter, here is a partial lists of the"Under 3,000 Hits Club"-Rogers Hornsby,Babe Ruth,Joe Jackson,Harry Heilmann,Ted Williams,Jimmie Foxx,Lou Gehrig,Joe Dimaggio,Al Simmons,Mickey Mantle,Ralph Kiner,Mel Ott,Bill Terry,Hank Greenberg,Jackie Robinson,Mike Schmidt,Barry Bonds, etc, etc

Nice article. Haven't read through a wall of text like that in a while. I'm a fan of ichiro, glad he was mention once here lol...I hope he gets to 3000...

Well he does have 3000 if you include his days in Japan. He's 35...don't most players retired at the age of like 38ish? Ichiro I think because of his physique can probably go 40+. I think he can still do 200+ hits per season for another 5 years.
