Jose Canseco Trying to Comeback
No you didn’t misread the title to this post. I am dead serious. Apparently 47 year old Jose Canseco is trying to make a comeback to the Major Leagues. His first choices are the Boston Red Sox or his former team the Oakland Athletics. Canseco has been spewing constantly on twitter the past 24 hours about making his comeback and how his swing is in peak form. He has apparently been blasting the ball at the Vegas On Deck Academy for practice.
Check out some of his tweets from today:
Sure Canseco was a 350 hitter with a 1 in 9 hr per at bat average over his career, but he was also a steroid junkie, fame hour, and all around terrible teammate during his career.
Should he get his shot at a tryout? Or is this just another attempt by Canseco to make headlines?
Details of Yu Darvish’s Contract With the Rangers
Yu Darvish is taking the league and MLB media by storm. The Japanese pitcher who opted since 2004 to play professionally in the Japanese league instead of coming to the US for the bigger pay day, is finally signed to play in the MLB with the Texas Rangers.
Darvish pitched in the 2008 Beijing Olympics as well as the 2009 World Baseball Classic as a member of the Japanese national team. At 25 years of age, he is considered by many to be the best pitcher in Japanese professional baseball, and many think soon to be considered one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball.
Although his contract with the Rangers was originally thought to be a guaranteed $60M it turns out the deal is structured as a guaranteed $56M but with incentives and bonuses built into the contract. Foul Territory had these details of the breakdown:
Keep in mind that $56 million is guaranteed, and the rest can be earned through roster bonuses. He can opt out after five years if he reaches some high performance thresholds.
Also take note of the 2012 salary. The entire deal is Rangers-friendly if Darvish performs at an elite level.
2012: $5.5 million
2013: $9.5 million
2014: $10 million
2015: $10 million
2016: $10 million
2017: $11 million
Darvish can also earn bonuses for being a Cy Young recipient and for the team’s success in the post-season. There is a lot of pressure on Darvish to perform given the hefty price tag. Considering the Rangers paid his former Japanese team over $50M to release him, putting the total price tag well over $100M for this pitcher, he better bring the heat….
President Obama Hosts the Cardinals at the White House
The World Series Champion St.Louis Cardinals were welcomed to the White House today by the POTUS.
Back in August the Cardinals were 10.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League wild card race. They finished the season on a tear going 18-8 in September to win the wild card spot on the last day of action.
Then after a strong playoff run, they found themselves just one pitch away from elimination in the 6th game of the series against the Texas Rangers. Cardinals David Freese hit a walk-off home run in the 11th inning to tie the series 3-3. The Cardinals went on to win. It was for these reasons President Obama commented on the Cardinals place in the history of ‘comeback teams’….
Manager Tony La Russa, who retired after the series, and slugger Albert Pujols, who signed with the Los Angeles Angels in the offseason, were not with the team that made the trip to the nation’s Capital, which will also include a stop at Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., to visit with patients and their families.
Obama admired Pujols for hitting three home runs in one game and La Russa’s managerial career. He also praised the Cardinals as “the greatest comeback team in the history of baseball.” [via]
John Smoltz’ $7.2M House for Sale [PICS]
Former Atlanta Braves star pitcher John Smoltz was by no means underpaid during his career. But regardless of how much money these pro athletes make, I still always have a bit of a shock factor every time I see pictures of their houses in real estate listings when they go up for sale. These guys are living large, and Smoltz was no exception. Check out these images of his 10 bedroom, 12 bathroom spread that just went up for sale in Milton, Georgia.
Disney Family Wants to Buy Dodgers
A source has told the LA Times this weekend that the family of the late Roy Disney is planning to be an active bidder for the LA Dodgers.
Roy Disney was a longtime senior executive for The Walt Disney Company, which his father Roy Oliver Disney and his uncle Walt Disney founded. At the time of his death he was a shareholder (more than 16 million shares or about 1%), and served as a consultant for the company and Director Emeritus for the Board of Directors.
The family of the late Roy Disney has partnered with [Stanley] Gold, entrusting the man who runs the family investment firm to lead the charge for the Dodgers and try to restore prominent local ownership to the team.
The partnership was disclosed Saturday by a person familiar with the bid but not authorized to discuss it. Neither Gold nor any member of Roy Disney’s family would comment Saturday, spokesman Terry Fahn said.
With a star-studded and deep-pocketed roster of bidders that could feature the likes of Magic Johnson, Joe Torre, Mark Cuban and Peter O’Malley, outgoing owner Frank McCourt appears to believe the Dodgers can sell for at least $1.6 billion.[VIA LA Times]
The Walt Disney Co. owned the Angels when they won the World Series in 2002, then sold the team the next year for a good profit. The Roy Disney purchase of the Dodgers would therefore be the second time members of the Disney family hold ownership in the MLB. Roy Disney’s family would be purchasing the Dodgers as a private investment if they were the successful bidders.
