Boston Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield announces retirement
Tim Wakefield has retired from baseball at the age of 45. He finishes his career with a 200-180 record and 4.41 ERA. Spanning 19 years, he spent all but two seasons with the Boston Red Sox. The knuckleballer is third in Red Sox history with 192 victories.
Only Carl Yastrzemski (23), Ted Williams (19) and Dwight Evans (19) played more seasons with the Red Sox. Wakefield was the oldest player in baseball last year.
The Red Sox new GM Ben Cherington was not interested in giving Wakefield another shot with the team. Rather than test free agency, Wakefield opted to call it a career.
