Bad news for the Cincinnati Reds – their first baseman slugger Joey Votto has a torn meniscus in his left knee that will require him to undergo surgery. He’ll expect to miss 3-4 weeks.
The absence of Votto leaves a hole in the Reds’ lineup, and what’s worse is that this had to happen when everything was going well for Cincy. Votto’s injury will put some load on the shoulders of guys like Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce.
Votto injured himself on June 29th in a game against the San Francisco Giants. He had been playing through the pain ever since and the statistics showed the proof – a batting average of .281, no homers, and two RBI in the month of July so far. For the season, Votto was hitting .342 with 14 HR and 49 RBI. He currently leads all National League hitters in a few offensive categories such as doubles, on-base percentage, walks, etc.
