According to Sports Business Journal, ESPN has reached an agreement that keeps MLB games for the next eight years. ESPN paid a whopping $5.6 billion for the eight-year deal, which equals out to about $700 million per year. The new deal almost doubles the amount of money per year that ESPN already pays for MLB games (they pay $306 million per year already).
Two other relevant parts of this deal:
ESPN also will carry one Wild Card playoff game … ESPN also picked up rights to carry games featuring more popular teams, like the Yankees and Red Sox, more frequently.
