Pat Neshek, a pitcher for the Oakland A’s, had his newborn son, Gehrig John Neshek, pass away 23 hours after his birth on October 4th. Despite the death, Neshek pitched one day later when the A’s played the Tigers in Game 1 of the ALDS.
Although the A’s lost 3-1, they welcomed back Neshek by wearing patches with the initials “GJN” in honor of Neshek’s newly deceased son.
Neshek came into the game with two on and one out in the seventh inning, and he got out of it without giving up any runs. He said afterward he felt like somebody was watching and helping with his last pitch of the inning. When walking off the field, Neshek touched his patch while he was looking in the general area of where his wife was sitting.
