The Royals made headlines this morning when they signed Jeremy Guthrie to a three-year contract worth $25 million. However, he won’t be making the same amount of money each year – in 2013, Guthrie will make $5 million, in 2014, he’ll make $11 million, and in 2015, he’ll make $9 million. The deal is structured that way because the Royals are also paying Ervin Santana $12 million for next season – it kind of eases the effect of that spending on Santana.
Guthrie went 5-3 with a 3.16 ERA in 16 starts for Kansas City after arriving from Colorado. With the Rockies, he went 3-9 with a 6.35 ERA in 19 starts.
