One of the Red Sox’ top targets, Mike Napoli, has agreed to a three-year deal worth $39 million. Although MLB.com has confirmed it, the Red Sox have not yet.
With Jarrod Saltalamacchia, David Ross, and Ryan Lavarnway already catching for Boston, why would they sign Napoli, another catcher? Turns out that the Red Sox are going to primarily use him at first base. Napoli has started 118 games at first base in his career, so it’s not like he’s unfamiliar of the position.
This past season with the Rangers, Napoli hit .227 with 24 homers and 56 RBIs. Meh, they’re pretty decent numbers, but apparently the Sox think that he can repeat the numbers he had in 2011 – a .320 average with 30 homers and 75 RBIs.
