Moneyball Trailer (starring Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill and Phillip Seymour-Hoffman)

June 17, 2011 – Matt De Lima

Moneyball, the story of Oakland Athletics GM Billy Beane and how he forever changed the baseball landscape, has at least four people involved who I really enjoy. I’ll check out anything they’re associated with. Brad Pitt, first and foremost, is one of my favorite actors. From Fight Club to Inglorious Basterds to A River Runs Through It, I’m a big fan. Then there is Jonah Hill (Superbad, Get Him to the Greek) and Phillip Seymour-Hoffman (Capote, Almost Famous, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead) are both in this movie. Although Hill isn’t exactly on the same level, he’s still goofy and can get a laugh out of me.

Lastly, Aaron Sorkin co-wrote this screenplay. From his work on The West Wing and The Social Network, I’ve become a fan over the years and I’m really looking forward to this film. Moneyball opens September 23, 2011.

And here’s a bonus video of the author Moneyball, Michael Lewis, and other books such as The Blind Side and Liar’s Poker.

Fans React to Osama News With Chants of “U-S-A!” During Phillies-Mets Game (video)

May 2, 2011 – Matt De Lima

In the ninth inning of a game between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies last night, news of Osama Bin Laden’s death began to spread throughout Citizens Bank Park. It didn’t matter in that moment which team fans were rooting for, everyone was on the same team. The crowd began chanting “U-S-A!”

The game went on into extra innings where the Mets won in the 14th, 2-1.

Video: Coach Gives Kidney to Player

February 9, 2011 – Evan Hill

Talk about going above and beyond your job description. Check out this fantastic story of the Wake Forest Baseball coach, Tom Walkter, donating a Kidney to Kevin Jordan, one of his Freshman players. (Thanks to Jimmy Traina over at SI for the link).

You think that kid is going to put in extra time in the cages? I would say so.

Video: A-Rod is Creepy at Super Bowl

February 7, 2011 – Evan Hill

How is it that A-Rod manages to look creepy wherever he goes? Sure, this is just an example of bad (for his sake) timing from the camera man. But the last thing I wanted to see in last night’s Super Bowl was Cameron Diaz feeding popcorn to A-Rod (thanks to the guys over at Big League Stew for the Link):

Even weirder, did you get a look at those luxury boxes? A-Rod, Cameron Diaz, George W. Bush, Laura Bush, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, ASHTON KUTCHER? How the hell does he fit in there? And where was Demi Moore? And why do I care?…

Security Alert: Chipper Jones as Gate Agent

February 1, 2011 – Evan Hill

Apparently the terror level is down, because this doesn’t seem safe. In a publicity stunt for Delta Airlines, the Atlanta Braves made the boarding announcement for a flight from Atlanta to NYC. I can only assume the Mets fans on board were upset.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution had the story. In the video you’ll see Chipper Jones at the helm. Behind him are youngster Jordan Schafer, new Manager Fredi Gonzalez, and Team President John Schuerholz.

Looks like Chipper’s got a job if things don’t work out with the ACL recovery.

Video: The End of the Beer Line

January 20, 2011 – Evan Hill

Sports fans, welcome to the future. We’re all sick of waiting in line for beer and missing an entire half inning. We’re sick of hearing “oh man, did you see that diving catch?!” No, no I didn’t, because I spent fifteen minutes trying to buy two beers.

Well that’s all over, with a new invention that pours beer from the bottom of the cup using some sort of magnet device that has yet to be properly explained to me.

Let this video do all of the necessary explanation, as these guys pour fifty-six beers in one minute. Amazing.

The future looks delicious.

Video: Explaining the FIP Statistic

January 13, 2011 – Evan Hill

Many people have trouble accepting some of the newer, advanced statistics like WAR, OPS+, and SSC (Sunflower Seeds Chewed). This refusal to accept is often due simply to a lack of understanding. Many times, the easiest way to explain something is through a fun animated video. So check out this quick explanation of the FIP statistic, used to measure pitchers. Also, it’s funny:

Video: Insane Wiffle Ball Pitches

January 10, 2011 – Evan Hill

Not to brag, but I consider myself to be quite a wiffle ball player. Although, talking about your skills in a sport as obscure as wiffle ball may not be considered bragging in the first place.

If anyone has the right to brag about their skills in wiffle ball, it’s the guy in this video. Who knew it was possible to get this much movement, speed, and accuracy from such a light ball?

Maybe the Pirates will take a flier on him?

Marlins New Stadium

It’s no secret, the Marlins can’t get fans to their games, whether they’re in the playoff hunt or not. So, the thinking is: build a new stadium! Set to open in 2012, construction crews have been hard at work, building what many hope will create a resurgence in the Florida fan base.

If you want a taste of how the stadium will look, check out some of these renderings, or take a look at the video below:
