Gary Carter died on February 16, 2012. One of the greatest baseball players of the 1980s and one of the best people too, a Hall of Fame catcher, husband and father, he leaves behind a legacy as more than just a ball player. Carter played 18 years from 1974 to 1992. He won a World Series with the 1986 New York Mets. He was an 11-time All-Star, three-time Gold Glove Award winner, five-time Silver Slugger Award winner, two-time All-Star Game MVP, the winner of the 1989 Roberto Clemente Award and had his No. 8 retired by the Montreal Expos.

Carter was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003. In May 2011, Carter was diagnosed with brain cancer. After a 10-month battle with the inoperable tumors and aggressive therapy to cure him of his cancer, Carter lost his life. He was 57 years old.

This, for me, is one of those classic Simpsons episodes. It originally aired on February 20, 1992. For any that don’t remember this episode, this is the one where Homer joins the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant softball team. Mr. Burns spends a bunch of money to bring in professional baseball players from Major League Baseball. The episode feature a “who’s who” of great baseball players from the late-80s, early 90s: Roger Clemens, Ken Griffey Jr., Ozzie Smith, Wade Boggs, Jose Canseco, Darryl Strawberry (my favorite player at the time), Don Mattingly, Mike Scioscia and Steve Sax. But I won’t spoil the full plot for you! Enjoy the episode! Check out this Wikipedia page to learn more about some of the interesting details that went into the episode. Please contact me if this video no longer works!

August 25, 2010 – Michael Cahill

During Sweet Lou’s Run we had some good moments but we missed the classic Lou tirades that made him famous. We hoped he’d be angry Lou but instead we got:

But that’s ok because the no matter how good Lou could have been in a Cub uniform he would have paled in comparison to the tirade of all tirades. The Lee Elia tirade. In the early 80′s the Cubs really sucked and no one showed up. And one day Lee had enough. There is no way to touch this. BE WARNED: THIS IS VERY OFFENSIVE.
